More Gay Moz Stuff - Southpaw Grammar/Maladjusted Reissue
From the Bay Area Reporter, 25 June 2009"
Moz on Moz
Our own personal Pride present is the simultaneous appearance of two reissued Morrissey records, Maladjusted (Universal) and Southpaw Grammar (RCA). There are unreleased songs, revised track orders and unpublished sleeve photos on both, but the real treasure is contained in liner notes newly penned by the irascible Moz himself.
"I pull out my feelings as if undetected for years in the Sea of Cortez," he writes for Maladjusted. "'Well, it's your own fault for reproducing,' I sing – unspeakable savagery. But the world is a mess anyway. And here we are in it – bullies with low self-esteem. It was W.H. Auden, after all, who said that childbirth is an act of hatred."
"Out in the cattle-market, Southpaw Grammar boots its way onto the pop charts at number 4. There is nothing on the media horizon to keep us afloat, so we sink. In the US, Reprise will not issue a single at all, and some months later, I am in a train heading for Chicago when I meet 'J.,' who is a Reprise executive, and he explains, 'You know, Southpaw Grammar was deliberately buried by the company because they knew you wouldn't extend your contract.'
"How very, very lovely.
"Would a fat, sniveling child have brought me more happiness?
"Is there still time to exchange Southpaw Grammar for a fat, sniveling child?"
